Core Zones

Core zones are basically the area where the main forests are. Like all wildlife tourism in India, as a rule, only 20% of the Core Zone is open for the tourism to generate income for the park. Rest 80% is left undisturbed for the purpose of conservation. Since Pench Tiger Reserve is spread across two states, there are core zones inside each of these states for jeep safari.

In Madhya Pradesh, the park is not divided into zones, however there are 3 different entry points inside the park. These entry gates are called Touria, Jhamtara and Karmajhiri. Many locals also call the entire area of Pench as Karmajhiri. The gates of entry may differ, however once inside the park, the safari jeeps can access any area inside the Madhya Pradesh. Touria is one of the most popular entry gates preferred by most wildlife enthusiasts.

Buffer Zones

Buffer zones are the peripheral areas that surround the core zones. Buffer zones are rich in diverse flora and fauna. They are also extremely crucial from the perspective of tiger conservation. The additional forest covers help in absorbing the spill- over population of the tigers especially in high tiger density reserves. This supports their growing population.

The buffer zones of Pench Tiger Reserve are: Khawasa, Rukhad and Teliya.

Best Time To Visit

Open for visitors from October to June, it is often said that post the monsoons once the parks open are the best time to visit Pench. However we differ in that opinion and believe that each season has it’s own charm.
With great weather and lush greenery post the monsoon season, the parks are truly a delight in October & November.

Visiting Pench in winters is a different experience. With a slight nip in the air and a bit of fog in the early mornings, the park almost feels surreal. It is also a great season for bird watching as myriads of migratory birds tend to visit the park during this season.

While in summers, the sun is at it’s harshest but this is the time when most wildlifers and wildlife photographers visit the park due to great sightings of the mighty Royal Bengal Tiger and other animals. Due to the heat, most animals frequent the water bodies to quench their thirst and it is usually these waterholes that become the best spot for sighting these animals.
